DEFIANCE, Ohio – Matthew Johnson's second-period goal helped Defiance wrap up its 2008 home schedule with a 1-0 victory over Mount St. Joseph on Saturday, October 25. The Jackets improve to 1-5 in the HCAC with the win, their fourth consecutive defeat of the Lions.
DC threatened early on Tony Cornell's shot off the post in the eighth minute, but the two teams would remain scoreless through the opening period. The Jackets finally broke through in the 70th minute, as Johnson knocked in Adam Collins' cross to put Defiance on top, 1-0. Mount St. Joseph was not ready to concede, as the Lions had seven of their nine second-period shots in the final 15 minutes of the match. However, DC keeper Mitch Livensparger had several big saves down the stretch, including two from point-blank range in the final two minutes to help the Jackets pull out the victory.
Greg Vogt led Defiance with four shots on the day, while Chris Chabowski, Cornell and Kevin Elson each had two shots in the contest. Johnson, who now has two goals this season, scored in his only shot of the match, while Collins now has three points with one goal and one assist this season. Livensparger finished the match with three saves to record the first shutout of his career at DC.
DC (1-14) will be back in action on Wednesday, October 29, when they travel to N. Manchester, Ind. for a 4:00 p.m. match with the Spartans of Manchester College.
