Men’s golf concludes season at HCAC Championships
TERRE HAUTE, Ind. – The 2023-24 men's golf season concluded for the Defiance Yellow Jackets at the HCAC Championships. The 54-hole event was held Friday through Sunday at the Country Club of Terre Haute.
DC's top player for the weekend was Brenden Garvin with rounds of 84, 86, and 86 for 256 in the tournament. Bretton Basford closed out his first conference 10 shots behind Garvin. He started out with back-to-back rounds of 84 on Friday and Saturday before turning in a round of 98 on Sunday.
Sam Boyles, Zach Canterbury, and Will Garlock all finished at the tail end of the field. Boyles shot 91 on Friday and Sunday sandwiched his lowest round of the weekend on Saturday, an 88, to total 270 for the tournament. Canterbury finished at 279 for the tournament with rounds of 93, 90, and 96. Garlock recorded a tournament score of 342 following rounds of 104, 114, and 124.
As a team, the Yellow Jackets finished ninth out of nine programs with a 1071. Friday's team round of 352 was followed up with a season-low 348 on Saturday. On Sunday, DC took a team score of 371.
The team championship was claimed by Rose-Hulman, who finished 20 shots clear of second-place Transylvania. The Fightin' Engineers also claimed medalist honors from Owen King. He started the day with a four-shot lead and held on for a one-shot victory over Mount St. Joseph's Carter Stried. King recorded rounds of 70, 69, and 73 to add up to 212 strokes for the weekend.
The HCAC Championship was the last tournament of the season and the last competition as a member of the conference.
