Yellow Jackets Shoot Record Low at Spiess Memorial
WAUSEON, OHIO -- The Defiance College men's golf "B" team shot a school-record low 298 strokes and placed fourth overall at the annual Jon P. Spiess Memorial Tournament held at Ironwood Golf Club in Wauseon.

Owens Community College came in first in the team standings with a score of 286 strokes. University of Northwestern Ohio was second at 295 strokes and Trine (Ind.) University rounded out the top three with 297 strokes. Defiance also had another team that qualified in the standings and finished tied for 12th with a one-day total 314 strokes.
Making up the "B" team was sophomores Jake Tinsley (Kettering/Eaton), Zach Weber (Ottoville), Derek Lucas (Eaton) and freshmen Alex Miday (Canton/St. Thomas) and Austin Alexander (Fortville, Ind./Mt. Vernon). Alexander posted the top score for the Jackets with an opening nine-hole score of 36 strokes and then followed it up with a 37 for an overall score of 73 strokes and placed in a tie for eighth. Tinsley was second with an 18-hole total 74 strokes and Miday was third at 75 strokes. Lucas rounded out the qualifying scores with a 76 and Weber ended the day with a single-round total of 80 strokes.
The Jackets' "A" team was made up of seniors Hurst Talbott (Columbus/St. Charles Prep), Ryan Edelbrock (Delphos/Delphos St. John's), sophomore Rick Girona (McClure/Ostego) and freshmen Tyson Bostelman (Archbold) and Ben Baumgartner (Holland/Springfield). Talbott recorded the lowest round of the group at 76 strokes and was followed by Edelbrock with 77 strokes. Baumbartner carded an 18-hole total 79 strokes and completing the list of competitors was Girona and Bostelman with 82 and 86 strokes respectively.
Defiance also had two players compete as individuals in sophomore James DeMeo (Oregon/Clay) and freshman Adam McGinnis (Bloomville/Buckeye Central). DeMeo shot a 98, while McGinnis carded an 89.
The men's golf team will next compete in the Anderson (Ind.) University Invitational on Saturday-Sunday, Sept. 13-14. The first round is set to begin at 11 a.m. in Anderson, Ind.
