Yellow Jackets sit in 5th after first weekend of HCAC Tourney
FRANKLIN, Ind. - The Defiance College Men's Golf team wrapped up the opening weekend of the 2014 Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference Tournament and sit in fifth place as the teams regroup for the second weekend next Saturday and Sunday.
FRANKLIN, Ind. - The Defiance College Men's Golf team wrapped up the opening weekend of the 2014 Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference Tournament and sit in fifth place as the teams regroup for the second weekend next Saturday and Sunday.
Defiance finished day one with a 321, good enough for sixth place. However, the Yellow Jackets came back Sunday and fought through a windy day and moved up to fifth, closing out with a two-day score of 654 after a 333 on Sunday.
Jacob Tinsley led the way for the Yellow Jackets with a 156 over the first two days in Franklin, Ind. The freshman sits in 11th place overall after shooting rounds of 77 and 79 on the weekend.
Senior Mike Ross has been just behind Tinsley in the scorebook. Ross opened up with an 80 on Saturday and came back Sunday to shoot an 81. Ross sits in 17th place with a 161.
Ricardo Girona is third for the Yellow Jackets after two rounds. Girona shot a round of 81 on Saturday. However, he struggled a little with the wind on Sunday and finished the day eight strokes higher than his previous day with an 89. Girona is in a tie for 26th heading into next weekend with a 168.
The other scorer for Defiance through the first two days has been Zach Weber. Rounds of 83 and 86 have Weber sitting in 29th place after the weekend, shooting a 169 overall for 36 holes.
Josh DeGroff didn't score for Defiance on day one after struggling with a 93. However, the senior wrapped up Sunday when of the better rounds as far as improvement goes, shooting six strokes under day ones score with an 87. DeGroff matched Girona for the fourth and final scoring round of team scores on day two.
Hurst Talbott also golfed for the Yellow Jackets as an individual for the first two rounds. Talbott put together rounds of 79 and 90 over the first 36 holes.
The Yellow Jackets will return to action on Saturday with the third round of the HCAC Tournament at the Eagle Rock Golf Club in Defiance. The third and fourth rounds will be played at DC's home course to wrap up the four round tournament.
