Purple and Gold Finish out HCAC’s for Season Finale
TERRA HAUTE, Ind. – Sunday, May 5 marked the completion of the 2013 campaign for the Defiance College men’s golf team, as it wrapped up play at the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference Golf Championships.
TERRA HAUTE, Ind. – Sunday, May 5 marked the completion of the 2013 campaign for the Defiance College men's golf team, as it wrapped up play at the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference Golf Championships. The Yellow Jackets ended the four rounds of action in eighth place totaling 1,372 strokes.
Junior Mike Ross led DC with a 72-hole score of 319. The Bryan High product has been the anchor for the team all season, as he has had the top score for every round of play including Sunday with a mark of 78 strokes. Ross's final scorecard was good for 19th place at the championships.
Coming in second for the Jackets was sophomore Hurst Talbot. The second-year golfer shot an 80 on Sunday for his best round on the links this season. Talbot struggled heavily in the first day of the conference tournament, scrapping together a 101. But the Columbus, Ohio, native never wavered and got better each round to finish strong with a final total of 353.
Other finishes for the Defiance men's golf team Sunday included an 86 for sophomore Ryan Edelbrock and an 85 for junior Josh Degroff. Edelbrock concluded the two-weekend championships with a final total of 355 and Degroff added his best round of the tournament Sunday to turn in a 72-hole scorecard of 363. The junior golfer was also chosen as DC's selection for the All-Sportsmanship Team.
Winning the HCAC Men's Golf Championships were the Transylvania Pioneers who claimed their seventh-straight conference title with 1,178 strokes for just 26 over par. Transy's Hunter Frazier was the top individual golfer for the championships, shooting an outstanding four-round total of 289 for one over par. The mark was six strokes better than the second-place finisher.
Hanover College competed well and took second at 1,214 strokes, while Mount St. Joseph came in third place with 1,224.
