DEFIANCE, Ohio – Anthony Brown led five Yellow Jackets in double figures and fueled a 91-75 upset win over No. 10 Anderson on Wednesday night inside the Karl H. Weaner Community Center. The victory moved DC to a perfect 8-0 at home and snapped AU's school-record, 14-game win streak.
The signature victory was Defiance's first over a nationally-ranked foe since topping No. 13 UW-Oshkosh, 53-46, at the RDV Sportsplex Tournament in Orlando, Florida on December 18, 2007.
Defiance played with energy and poise throughout the evening and shot 58.2 percent from the floor on the night, including eight-of-18 from three-point territory. The balanced attack was paced by a career-high 23 points from Brown, while Mike Floyd ended with 13 points and seven assists, Logan Wolfrum added 13 points and three blocks and Kyle Tietje just missed a double-double with 11 points and nine rebounds.
Nick Sales flirted with a triple-double, en route to piling up 17 points, eight rebounds, six assists, two steals and one block and now ranks 24th on the all-time scoring charts for Defiance with 1,203 career points.
The Jackets used the fast-clicking offense to keep the pressure on the Ravens, while clamping down on the defensive end over the final 20 minutes. DC held Anderson's efficient offense to 34.6 percent shooting after the break, while maintaining the lead throughout the period.
Despite leading since the 8:03 marker of the opening half, the Jackets found themselves clinging to a 61-60 edge with just 9:59 left to play. Defiance scored the game's next eight points behind a Tietje layup and five-straight from Brown.
Wolfrum then sank a pair of pivotal three-point shots on consecutive trips down the court to widen the DC lead to 74-64, before Sales ripped down an offensive board and one-handed a pass underneath to a wide-open Heath Armstrong for the easy deuce and the 12-point cushion with 5:40 showing on the clock.
After the lead had swelled to 15 points, Wolfum swatted his third shot of the game, gathered the deflection and hit a streaking Tietje in stride for a thunderous dunk. Sales then delivered the dagger by picking off an Anderson pass on the perimeter and going the distance for the flush and the 85-66 lead with 2:54 to go.
The pair of dunks put the exclamation marks on a 24-6 Defiance run that sent the Jackets on their way to the 91-75 victory over the highly-touted Ravens (17-2, 9-1 HCAC).
Defiance (15-4, 6-4 HCAC) will not have time to savor the triumph however, as the Jackets are set to host a red-hot Hanover squad (9-9, 6-4 HCAC) on Saturday at 3:00 pm in a battle for second-place in the conference standings.
