DEFIANCE, Ohio – Defiance College rebounded from its first loss of the year with an 82-61 blowout of Rose-Hulman inside the Karl H. Weaner Community Center on Saturday. The Jackets never trailed, marking the second-straight time that they have led wire-to-wire over Rose Hulman.
The 40 minutes that DC had or shared the lead on Saturday extended its streak to 95 minutes and 58 seconds of action since it last faced a deficit against the Engineers, spanning the last three matchups. The Jackets overcame that deficit with a 34-22 run to win, 69-58, at Rose-Hulman on January 7, 2009, before leading for all 40 minutes of a 78-67 home victory against R-H on February 14, 2009 and Saturday's 21-point win.
The Jackets raced to a 31-16 advantage with 3:10 left in the first half, before Rose-Hulman scored five unanswered points and had a three in the air to potentially draw the Engineers to within seven points. The shot rattled out and Heath Armstrong buried a three on the other end to put the Jackets back in control.
Defiance would close the first half on an 8-0 rally and continued to pull away throughout the second half, en route to building a 60-29 cushion with 12:50 left in the game. The 29-8 DC spurt spanned 7:49 of action and turned the 31-21 advantage into a 31-point spread.
Seven different Yellow Jackets scored at least two points during the extended rally, with Kyle Tietje and Nick Sales fueling the surge with a combined 13 points in the paint to help DC put the game out of reach.
Defiance would roll from there, coasting to the 82-61 victory to improve to 11-1 under head coach Kyle Brumett when scoring at least 80 points.
The Jackets controlled the paint all game long and ended with a 47-28 advantage in rebounds and a 46-24 edge on points in the paint.
Sales led all players with 15 points and eight rebounds in 19 minutes of action, while Kyle Tietje netted 14 points, Anthony Brown scored 11 and Logan Wolfrum tossed in 10. Mike Floyd came off the bench to chip in nine points and five assists.
Defiance (5-1, 1-1 HCAC) will remain at home to take on Manchester on Wednesday night at 8:00 pm. The men will follow a 6:00 pm contest between the DC and Manchester women.
