Defiance had little trouble advancing past Mount Union, taking a 13-10 edge on a three-point shot from Heath Armstrong and holding the lead throughout the remainder of the evening. The Armstrong trifecta sparked a 26-11 rally that lifted DC to its largest lead of the first half. The spurt ended how it started, with a long-range dagger from Armstrong giving Defiance a 36-21 advantage with 6:05 left in the first period.
The Jackets quickly deflected Mount Union's only run of the second stanza with yet another extended rally. This time DC turned to Wolfrum, who connected on a trio of trifectas and netted 13 points to fuel an 18-9 spurt midway through the half. The run doubled a nine-point lead to a commanding, 70-52, advantage with 8:17 showing on the clock. Defiance cruised from that point, rolling into the championship game on Sunday with the 13-point victory.
Wolfrum continued his impressive collegiate start by scoring 18 of his game-high 28 points in the second half to lead all players in scoring, assists and steals. The Ayersville High product hit nine-of-11 shots from the floor, including all six attempts from beyond the arc and added seven assists and three steals. Nick Sales registered his first double-double of the season with 17 points and 10 rebounds, while Armstrong ended with eight points and Kyle Tietje pulled down seven boards.
Defiance (2-0) will look to stay perfect on the season when it plays Adrian on Sunday at 4:00 pm. The winner will be the 2009 John Dawson Invitational Champion.
