DELAWARE, Ohio – Defiance closed a key non-conference clash at Ohio Wesleyan on a 15-0 run to earn an 80-65 victory over the Bishops and extend its win streak to five wins in a row.
Both teams battled through 10 lead changes and 13 ties with neither being able to seize control of the action for much of the night. Things heated up in the closing minutes however, as OWU's Kyle Miller sank a three to knot the scoring at 62-62.
Anthony Brown answered by connecting on DC's first trey in 11 tries in the second period to push DC back on top by three. Miller then hit another trifecta on Wesleyan's next touch, only to see Kevin Tietje continue the flurry with a triple of his own on DC's ensuing possession.
The freshman forward was only getting started, as a stick back and an easy layup gave Tietje seven-straight points and ran DC's lead to 72-65. Tietje then handed the reins back to Brown, who delivered the knock out blow from the corner to give Defiance a 10-point cushion with just over two minutes to play.
The Jackets did not stop there, as Nick Sales hit a pair from the charity stripe and Brown rattled home his third-straight attempt from long distance to close out the 15-0 spurt and seal the 80-65 road victory over Ohio Wesleyan.
The Bishops had no answer for Pettaway, who scored 16 points and set new career-highs with 18 rebounds and six assists from his center position. Kevin Tietje also set a personal best with 18 points, while Brown added 15.
Defiance climbs to 6-3 with the victory over the defending North Coast Athletic Conference Tournament Champions and NCAA Sweet 16 team from one year ago.
The Jackets will now take 10 days off before hosting the 34th-Annual Purple and Gold Financial Tournament on Dec. 29 and 30 inside the Karl H. Weaner Community Center.
DC is slated to take on Rockford on the opening night at 8:00 pm, after Calvin and Geneva square off at 6:00 pm. The consolation and championship games will be played on Dec. 30 at 5:00 and 7:00 pm.
