ANDERSON, Ind. – The Defiance College Yellow Jackets picked up their first win of the season Saturday afternoon by defeating the Anderson University Ravens 34-0 at Macholtz Stadium.
The Yellow Jackets (1-3, 1-1 Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference) forced six turnovers and put together 327 yards of total offense en route to DC's first shutout victory in nearly three years. Defiance's last shutout victory came on October 16, 2010, when the Yellow Jackets won 33-0 at Earlham.
The stingy Defiance defense picked off four Anderson (0-3, 0-1 HCAC) passes and limited the Ravens to negative yardage rushing in the game with a season high seven sacks and 14.5 tackles for a loss.
Andrew Feldhaus, who entered the week leading the NCAA in forced fumbles (4), picked up another forced fumble in the game, along with leading the Yellow Jackets defense with nine tackles. The Lutz, Fla. native also had a sack, two tackles for a loss, and two pass break ups in the game.
Blaine McGowan joined Feldhaus with a team high nine tackles in the game. McGowan, a senior linebacker for the Defiance defense, also had two tackles for a loss and picked up two fumble recoveries.
Senior defensive back Tony Sierra picked off two of the four Defiance interceptions in the game, bringing his season total to four on the year. Sierra also had five tackles in the game and broke up four more passes.
Seth Evans and Josh Slayton had the other two interceptions for the Yellow Jackets. Slayton returned his interception 16 yards for a touchdown and the final score of the game.
Offensively, Sean Washington had 120 yards rushing in three quarters of work. The sophomore quarterback had touchdown runs of two and nine yards in the first half. Washington also finished 5-of-9 passing for 73 yards.
Mark Boggs saw some action at quarterback in the third and fourth quarters, rushing for 21 yards and completing a 20-yard pass to Aaron Spence.
Trevon Burrell had the other score for the Yellow Jackets in the game. Burrell had 53 yards rushing, including a 3-yard touchdown run early in the third quarter to put DC up 24-0.
Spencer Saunders had a perfect day kicking for the Yellow Jackets. Saunders connected on field goals of 31 and 24 yards, while also completing all four extra point attempts.
For the fourth time this season, Defiance has produced more total yards of offense than its opponents. The 234 yards rushing for the Yellow Jackets was a season high and the -21 yards rushing allowed is the first time that DC has held an opponent to negative yards rushing since the Yellow Jackets held Bluffton to -6 yards in 2006. Anderson's 157 yards of total offense is a season low for the Yellow Jackets defense.
The Defiance College Yellow Jackets will return home next Saturday for a 1:30 p.m. kickoff at Justin F. Coressel Stadium against Earlham College.
