DEFIANCE, Ohio - Defiance College will cap its 2012 Homecoming on Saturday with a home game against Anderson University. Both squads will enter play looking to climb the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference standings by notching their first victories of the young season. [Game Notes]
SCOUTING DEFIANCE - Despite getting off to a 0-3 start, the Defiance offense has improved each time out this season, upping its point total and overall production in each outing. The passing attack has led the way, as Garrett Teague has increased his passing yards from 84 to 107 to 248 in the three games. On the season, Teague has accounted for 185.7 total yards of offense per outing, with a career-high 300 total yards one week ago.
SCOUTING ANDERSON - A 0-2 start for Anderson has extended its current losing streak to eight-straight defeats dating back to 2011. The Ravens have struggled mightily on the defensive side of the ball, allowing over 45 points and at least 450 total yards of offense in both outings so far in 2012. In those two games, AU has yielded 5.6 yards per play to its opposition. Tyler Ganus, Ben Southards and Mitch Tuttle have done their part however, as each has averaged over 10 tackles per game this season.
LAST MEETING - Defiance withstood a fourth-quarter rally from Anderson to secure a 28-21 road victory on October 22 of 2011. The Jackets churned out 192 yards on the ground and scored all 28 points via four rushing touchdowns. Hunter Robertson helped the defense take care of the rest, by leading DC with 15 tackles.
SERIES HISTORY - Heading into the 52nd meeting on the gridiron with Anderson, the Yellow Jackets hold a 32-18-1 edge in the all-time series. The gap has widened of late, with DC winning each of the past seven contests and outscoring AU by a 225-75 count in those games. During that stretch, Defiance has scored at least 20 points in all seven games, with Anderson only surpassing the 13-point mark one time.
LAST TIME OUT - A trio of fourth-quarter strikes was not enough to notch the first win of the season for Defiance, as the Jackets fell by a 33-20 margin against Rose-Hulman. DC racked up 144 more yards of offense than the Engineers but dug too deep of a hole after missing numerous scoring chances in the first half. Garrett Teague and Jon Carrabino hooked up six times for 167 yards and a touchdown to spark the offense, with D.J. Brigham's 12 tackles pacing the defense.
JUDGEMENT DAY - When Anderson invades Coressel Stadium on Saturday, it will see a familiar face on the Defiance sideline, as former AU head coach, Jeff Judge, is in his first year as the defensive coordinator at DC. Judge ran the Raven program for nine seasons prior to the 2012 campaign.
CARRABINO TAKES TOP PLAY HONORS - For the second-straight week, Defiance won the vote for the HCAC's Highlight of the Week, as the 80-yard touchdown pass from Garrett Teague to Jon Carrabino earned 1,216 votes to top the second-place play from Rose-Hulman by 500 tallies.
WANT TO GET AWAY? - The Yellow Jackets have struggled at home over the past two seasons, going 1-7 since the start of the 2011 campaign and being outscored by 20.0 points per game in that span. Those numbers have worsened in DC's last four home contests, with Defiance going 0-4 and yielding 41.5 points while scoring 13.3 per outing. On the flip side, the Jackets are 8-3 on the road in league play since the 2009 season and have won each of their past three road clashes within the HCAC.
AROUND THE HCAC - Three of the HCAC's four unbeatens in league play will be in action on Saturday, as No. 25 Franklin (1-0) hosts Earlham (0-1), Bluffton (1-0) welcomes MSJ (0-1) and Rose-Hulman hosts Manchester (0-1). The fourth game on the docket will pit DC (0-1) against Anderson (0-0).
