GREENWOOD, Ind. – For the second-straight week, a Defiance College highlight has been voted as the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference Play of the Week, after Jon Carrabino's 80-yard catch and score against Rose-Hulman on Saturday, September 15 claimed the honor.
Carrabino's fourth-quarter touchdown was the only play of the drive for Defiance and was the longest reception of the senior wide receiver's career. Carrabino went on to haul in six passes from junior quarterback Garrett Teague and set a new career-high with 167 receiving yards.
Footage from Carrabino's 80-yard score earned nearly 1,000 views online in the three days since being posted on several social media outlets, including Defiance Athletics' YouTube, Facebook and Twitter pages.
The social media campaign saw Defiance pull in over 1,200 votes for the highest voting total in the three-week existence of the award. Carrabino's 1,216 votes topped the second-place play of Rose-Hulman by exactly 500 votes and amounted to 60-percent of the 2,013 total votes cast for the five finalists within the 36-hour voting window.
The Jackets also posted the highest percentage earned for a vote one week ago, with Aaron Smith's 58-yard touchdown run at Adrian netting over 97 percent of the 259 total votes cast.
The HCAC Football Play of the Week is a new feature for the league in 2012. Highlights can be submitted by sports information directors and coaches from league institutions and the voting is open to the public.
Carrabino will look to lead DC against Anderson on Saturday, September 22, when the Jackets host the Ravens for a 1:30 pm start on Homecoming Weekend.
