GREENWOOD, Ind. – The Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference announced on Monday that DC's Rick Powell and Tom Foos had been honored as HCAC Players of the Week after leading Defiance to a 41-21 Senior Day victory over Rose-Hulman. [HCAC Release]
Powell was named the HCAC Offensive Player of the Week, after completing 15-of-20 passes and posting career highs with 281 yards and three touchdowns through the air. Powell completed passes of 30, 31, 69 and 71 yards, with three of those completions going for touchdowns. The Rochester, Mich., native also had his way on the ground, piling up 114 rushing yards on 20 carries and netting 5.7 yards per pop against the HCAC's second-ranked rush defense entering play. Powell ended the afternoon with 395 yards of offense and three scores to help lead Defiance to its best start (5-1) in conference play since winning the HCAC Championship in 2001.
Foos was recognized as the HCAC Special Teams Player of the Week for the third time during his senior campaign, after scoring 11 points in the win. Foos split the uprights from 23 and 30 yards out to give Defiance leads of 3-0 and 13-0 and added five point-after tries. The Helena, Ohio, native used a pair of touchbacks to average 58.1 yards per kickoff and averaged 45.8 yards per punt over five attempts. Foos boomed a 64-yard punt, had one touchback and pinned Rose-Hulman inside of its own five-yard line on consecutive punts in the fourth quarter to help stall the Engineers' comeback efforts.
The HCAC Player-of-the-Week honor is the second for Powell in his career and the sixth for Foos during his four years with the Yellow Jackets. Defiance now leads all football programs in the HCAC with nine weekly honors from the conference office in 2010.
The Jackets (5-3, 5-1 HCAC) will close the season with a pair of road games at Manchester and at Bluffton. DC will take on Manchester (2-6, 1-5 HCAC) on November 6 at 1:30 pm.
