Gunner Gregg's (Graytown, Ohio/Oak Harbor) fifth-inning, solo home run gave Defiance a 1-0 lead through the middle of the sixth inning, but a five-run sixth by the Pioneers was enough to lift them to game one win. The Yellow Jackets outhit the Pioneers 8-7 but had just four runners reach scoring position.
Defiance starting pitcher Cohen Nies (Loss, 2-6; Logansport, Ind./Lewis Cass) threw up five zeroes on just two hits and seven strikeouts before the Pioneers' outburst in the sixth to shoulder the losing decision.
Transylvania tied the game with a one-out, RBI single from Henry Mitcham followed by another by Austin Taylor to grab the lead. After a Walter Munday walk placed runners on first and second, Houston Manning blasted a three-run homer to cap off the rally.
Transy's Brennan Perry (Win, 6-0) logged four scoreless innings of relief and withstood five DC hits. In relief for Defiance, Jeremy Russo (Clinton Township, Mich./Fraser) turned in a perfect eighth inning.
