Baseball notches win on Opening Day

The Defiance baseball team notched a 5-1 win at Sewanee during Game 1 of Opening Day action on Saturday afternoon. Game 2 was postponed due to fog and will be played tomorrow Sunday, February 27 as part of a doubleheader.

• Senior Cohen Nies earned the win on the mound during Opening and pitched 5.0 innings of work. He allowed no runs off three hits and struckout ten batters.
• Sophomore John Hammerstein pitched 3.0 innings and earned three strikeouts.
• Senior Kendall Duval pitched the final inning and got two strikeouts to seal the win.
• Senior Alex Morr led the Yellow Jackets at the plate with two hits and one RBI.
• Senior Nate Kaffenbarger and sophomore Trent Murdock each recorded two hits for Defiance.
• Junior Josh Vischer chipped in one hit and one RBI.
• Junior Dylan King and sophomore Mitchell Roever each grabbed one hit.
• Matt Munn started in the circle for Sewanee pitching the first three innings and earned seven strikeouts.

The Difference

• Defiance got the scoring started in the fourth inning with a Vischer single, while sophomore Hunter Bostater scored on a wild pitch to get a 2-0 lead.
• The Yellow Jackets grew their lead in the sixth inning scoring three runs to make it 5-0.
• Sewanee notched their lone run in the seventh inning off a balk to make the final score, 5-1.
• The Yellow Jackets tallied ten hits, while the Tigers grabbed four.
• Each team recorded two errors during the contest.

• The Yellow Jackets return to action on the road when they take on Sewanee once again in doubleheader action on Sunday, February 27. Game 1 will be at 12:00 pm and be a seven inning contest and Game 2 will be at 2:30 and will be a regular nine inning game.
