DEFIANCE, Ohio – Recent highlights on this date, April 3, in the history of Defiance College athletics include the baseball team picking up close road wins in 2010 and 2013, along with men’s golfer Jace Neal’s excellent round at an 18-hole event, which also happened a decade ago.
DEFIANCE, Ohio – Recent highlights on this date, April 3, in the history of Defiance College athletics include the baseball team picking up close road wins in 2010 and 2013, along with men's golfer Jace Neal's excellent round at an 18-hole event, which also happened a decade ago.
At Franklin College in 2010, the Defiance baseball squad registered a 6-4 Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference victory after pounding out 14 hits. Leadoff batter Kirk Jesse spearheaded the offense by going 4 for 5 with four stolen bases and three runs scored while Tim Pitro was 3 for 5, scoring twice and driving in three runs, including the game-winner. Casey Hahsen also went 3 for 5 with a double and two runs batted in. Matt Kaighin pitched six innings for the win with Stephen Leskow recording a save.
Three years later in a non-conference game at Trine University, the Yellow Jackets held on for a 5-4 triumph after getting 13 hits. Patrick Masopust and Chris Donese each had three hits and an RBI while Darin Waterman homered, doubled and scored twice. Winning pitcher Andy Habecker threw six innings while Alex Schomaeker was credited with a save.
In the one-day 2010 Scarlet Wave Golf Invitational hosted by Ohio State University at Marion, Neal was one of three players to break 80, firing a 78 to tie for second place in a field of 49. In the team standings, DC shot 337 for fourth place among 10 squads.
Additionally, Defiance split a home softball doubleheader with Trine, winning the first contest before losing the second, seven years ago.
