DEFIANCE, Ohio – On this date, March 30, in Defiance College athletics history, several teams and individuals performed well in recent years.
At home in 2015, the Defiance men's tennis team routed Heidelberg University, 8-1, with James DeMeo, Ryan Nelson, Justin Walker and Adam Swisher all recording wins in both singles and doubles. The Yellow Jackets' victory came in the middle of a season-best five-match winning streak.
In 2007, the DC baseball squad rallied with three runs in the bottom of the ninth inning to beat Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference foe Franklin College, 5-4, in an exciting contest at Craig A. Rutter Field. Kirk Jesse provided the game-winning hit, a two-run single, while Mike Hill went 2 for 3 with a double, walk and run batted in. Tim Pitro was 2 for 4 with an RBI and a run scored while Lenny Koesters also had two hits in four at-bats and scored a run. Brandon Portales was the winning pitcher in relief after retiring all seven batters he faced (one strikeout).
The Defiance softball team hosted an HCAC doubleheader with Hanover College in 2013, winning the second game, 9-4, after suffering a 5-3 loss. In the victory, the Yellow Jackets collected 12 hits and scored in every inning but the sixth. Macy Ferrall finished 3 for 4 with a double, two runs scored and a pair of RBIs to lead the DC offense. Current assistant coach Makayla McAvoy also doubled and drove in two runs after going 2 for 4 with a run scored while Tori Plummer went 2 for 4 with an RBI and a run scored. Lauren Dicke, who pitched all seven innings for the win, also picked up two hits in four at-bats and scored a run.
Other notable performances on March 30 over the past few years came from members of the Defiance men's track and field and golf squads. Just last year, our Yellow Jackets competed in the Yellow Jacket Collegiate Open at Cedarville University with DC's Vince Jackson tying for first place in the high jump at 1.73 meters. On the golf course in 2014, Mike Ross shot 77 on the second day of the Rose-Hulman Invitational at Hulman Links Golf Course in Terre Haute, Indiana, to finish in eight place at 8-over-par 152, just six shots back of the tournament medalist in a 60-player field.
