Yellow Jackets defeat Pitt-Bradford in straight sets at Oberlin Invitational

OBERLIN, Ohio - Defiance College volleyball dominated Pitt-Bradford Saturday morning to earn a win at the Oberlin Invitational. The Yellow Jackets took the match with straight set scores of 25-8, 25-18, 25-12. The Yellow Jackets improve to 2-10 while Pitt-Bradford drops to 1-9.
The start of the match was tight as there were three ties early on. Tied at three, the Yellow Jackets started to pull away by winning 12 of the next 14 points. Jaelyn Tomoletz, Amina Chamoun, Shelby Clements, and Abi Teders recorded kills during the stretch. A kill from Bridget Kasting made it 16-8 and the Yellow Jackets went on to win the final nine points to claim the set. Madison Schoenauer ended it with a kill.
Set two was more competitive with Pitt-Bradford getting on the board first and the Panthers would hold the lead for the majority of the set early on. A ball handling error by Chloe Bellis allowed Defiance to tie the set at nine. The Yellow Jackets won the next five points and got kills from both Kaylynn Wellman and Courtney Maxwell. Shelby Clements served an ace while Wellman and Madison Schoenauer recorded blocks during the stretch. The Yellow Jackets took control from there and led 23-13 after an ace from Emma Chafins. Clements ended the set with a kill.
The Yellow Jackets scored the first two points of set three and led the entire way. Leading 13-9, Kaylynn Wellman had four straight kills to make it 17-9 and the Jackets would go on to win by taking 12 of the final 15 points after holding the 13-9 lead. Jaelyn Tomoletz recorded a kill to set up match point and Kayla Boettger ended it with an ace.
Defiance ended the match with 37 kills, 34 assists, and 46 digs. Pitt-Bradford ended with 21 kills, 21 assists, and 37 digs.
Kaylynn Wellman led the way for the Yellow Jackets in kills with nine. Courtney Maxwell added 16 assists and Emma Chafins recorded 20 digs. Shelby Clements had a team-high four service aces.
The Yellow Jackets have a week off before returning home to host Kalamazoo on Saturday, September 23 at 1 p.m.
