The Defiance College Athletic Department has announced that Nick Umbdenstock has been named the new head coach of the volleyball program.
DEFIANCE, Ohio - The Defiance College Athletic Department has announced that Nick Umbdenstock has been named the next head coach of the volleyball program. Umbdenstock spent the past two seasons as an assistant coach under Brie Brenner, who resigned in December. Brenner spent 10 seasons leading the Yellow Jackets, winning 120 matches, and earning the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference Coach of the Year award twice.
"I'm very excited for the opportunity to be the head coach of Defiance College's volleyball team. I want to thank Brie Brenner for her guidance in my first 2 seasons at Defiance. She is a great coach to learn from and I look forward to continuing the work she has done in her 10 years here" said Umbdenstock. "I would also like to thank Athletic Director Derek Woodley and President Mankey for entrusting me with the leadership of the program. I couldn't be happier at Defiance and I can't wait to get back to work this spring with the team!"
During his two seasons with the Yellow Jackets, Umbdenstock has coached three players to All-HCAC honors including Mackenzie Benham and Tre'Ana King, who were Honorable Mention selections this past fall.
Umbdenstock brings valuable experience at both the club and collegiate levels. Before joining the Defiance staff, he served as an assistant coach at fellow HCAC member Mount St. Joseph University. During that time he also simultaneously lead teams in the club environment. At the collegiate level, Umbdenstock has previously served as defensive coordinator at Cincinnati State Community College and spent time on the staff at Miami University (OH) as an intern.
At the club level, he held multiple positions with the Ohio Premier Volleyball Club, serving as an assistant club director, head coach of multiple age groups, and providing services as a private lesson and training instructor.
Originally from Fairborn, Ohio, Umbdenstock earned a Bachelor of Science in sport leadership and management with a coaching concentration from Miami University in 2015.
