Jackets sunk by Transy, 7-0, on Senior Day
DEFIANCE, Ohio – The Defiance Yellow Jackets suffered a 7-0 defeat to the Transylvania Pioneers at Justin F. Coressel Stadium on Saturday. The Pioneers (11-4-1) improved to 6-2 in HCAC action as the Yellow Jackets (2-11-2) fell to 0-8 in the league and their eighth straight defeat.
Transy dominated the touches and built up a 3-0 lead while enduring a steady rain during the first half. Isabella White scored the first goal 11 minutes into the contest. Off a ball played forward midfield, White beat a DC defender to the ball and fired a missile past the keeper for her team-leading 10th goal. Defiance defended the Pioneers well for most of the half until two more goals soared in before the break. In the 33rd minute, Ciana Araya scored on a long, 22-yard strike from straight away. Abbey Rowe netted the third goal of the game off a rebounded shot by Rachel Green. After Green's initial shot was knocked down by Sarah O'Shea, she rebounded her own shot and toed the ball over to her teammate on the other side of the open goal.
The Pioneers tacked on four more goals in the second half. Caitlin Fike split the pipes in the 61st minute with a kick over the keeper's right shoulder that she tucked inside the left post. Rowe scored two times off headers, one with 18:51 to go and a second at the 8:17 mark, to record a hat trick. Rowe's two second-half scores were sandwiched around Lilia Steen's goal which she knocked in from the left of the goal off a free kick by Tara Pund, which was her second assist of the game.
Defiance was outshot 37-1 in the loss as O'Shea stopped 18 shots that came her way. DC's lone shot was taken by freshman Haley Hughes.
The Yellow Jackets conclude their season on Wednesday at Mount St. Joseph. Kickoff against the Lions is scheduled for 7 p.m.
