Women's Soccer concedes late goal in home loss to Great Lakes Christian
DEFIANCE, Ohio - The Crusaders of Great Lakes Christian scored a late goal to knock off the Yellow Jackets 1-0 in women's soccer action Wednesday afternoon at Winsper-Knobel Memorial Field. The Crusaders improve to 4-3 and Defiance drops to 2-3-2.
Great Lakes Christian dominated the first half by outshooting the Yellow Jackets 14-0. The Crusaders fired off the first shot of the contest 45 seconds in when Brianna Vinton sent one wide left. Goalkeeper Sarah O'Shea made her first save two minutes into the game on a shot by Allie Ferrall. The best opportunity in the half came 20 minutes in on a free kick. The Yellow Jackets committed a foul which resulted in a free kick for Brianna Vinton, who from about 30 yards out, sent the ball just high over the goal. The two teams went to halftime tied at zero.
Out of halftime, the Yellow Jackets came out firing. Two minutes into the half, Melissa Bixler recorded the first shot attempt of the game wide and right of the goal. The opportunities continued when the Yellow Jackets were given two corner kicks. Hallie Webb kicked them both into the box but the Crusaders were there and defended it well. The one and only shot on goal came from Lexi Coward in the 57th minute.
Another corner came in the 58th minute which resulted in a header from Bixler but the ball just went wide right of the goal. That would be the final scoring opportunity for the Yellow Jackets in the game.
The Crusaders were able to break through and end the scoreless tie in the 87th minute. The Yellow Jackets were unable to control the ball near midfield and the Crusaders stole it. Chelsea Waller passed it ahead to Allie Ferrall and Ferrall took on two Defiance defenders and just slipped it past Sarah O'Shea into the lower right quadrant of the net for the game-winning goal with just over three minutes remaining.
The Yellow Jackets close out the non conference portion of their schedule Saturday afternoon with a trip to Muskingum at 1 p.m.
