Women's Soccer holds on for 3-2 triumph over Mount Mary
DEFIANCE, Ohio - Freshman goalkeeper Madison Hert made two incredible saves late in the game to preserve the win for the Yellow Jackets Saturday afternoon at Winsper Knobel Memorial Field. Defiance held on to win, 3-2. Last year at Winsper Knobel Memorial Field, the Yellow Jackets defeated Mount Mary by the same score.
Lexi Behringer and Paris Berrospe for the Blue Angels had two opportunities to tie it up in the final minute but the freshman goalkeeper Hert had other plans and laid it all on the line to rack up the two saves to preserve the win for the Yellow Jackets.
Hallie Webb scored two first half goals to put Defiance up 2-0 with 14 minutes remaining in the first half. The Blue Angels answered with a goal of their own in the 36th minute to cut the lead in half. The score would remain 2-1 going into halftime.
Seven minutes into the second half, Melissa Bixler notched her first goal of the season to extend the lead to 2-1. The Blue Angels, however, kept fighting and answered with a goal in the 73rd minute to cut the deficit to one.
Both teams had numerous scoring opportunities in the contest and in a game with both teams constantly attacking and putting pressure on one another. The Yellow Jackets held a slim advantage in shot attempts with 18 compared to 17 by Mount Mary.
Sarah O'Shea made four saves in the game while Hert saved three with the two crucial ones coming in the final minute. Webb led the team in shot attempts with seven.
The Yellow Jackets are back at Winsper Knobel Memorial Field Wednesday afternoon at 3:30 p.m. against Adrian.
