Defiance Swarms Bethany (W. Va.) in Overtime Thriller on the Final Day of the Purple and Gold Classic
DEFIANCE, OHIO – The Defiance College women’s soccer team delivered the game-winning goal in the 93rd minute to defeat the Bethany Bison 2-1 on Sunday afternoon on the final day of the Purple and Gold Classic at the Matthew Winsper Knobel Memorial Soccer Field.

The Yellow Jackets (1-1) entered overtime tied 1-1 before sophomore Katie Settich (Huber Heights/Chaminade Julienne) tallied the golden goal just minutes into extra time.
The Yellow Jackets outshot the Bison 20-9 in the contest, eight of which were on net. Whitney Webb (Troy) led the attack for DC with a game-high five shots.
In frame, Rachel Lowell (Lakewood) claimed the win making three saves through 93 minutes of work.
Defiance (1-1 overall) senior Kassie Memmer (Bowling Green) netted the contest first goal in the 7th minute blasting a shot to the right corner of the net just out of the reach of the Bethany goalkeeper. DC went on to outshot the Bison in the first half 11-3, five of which were on goal.
Bethany responded in the second half, delivering the equalizer in the 66th minute off a deflected ball by Defiance, freshman, goalkeeper Lowell. The Yellow Jackets looked to find the golden goal late in the half as Megan Ortiz (Swanton/Anthony Wayne) and Settich both placed shots on goal.
Bethany was led in the contest by Riley Meyers with four shots. Maria Concha Vasquez finished the game with six saves to lead the Bison defense.
Defiance returns to action Saturday, Sept. 9 as they play host to Oberlin at the Matthew Winsper Knobel Memorial Stadium. Game time is slated for 2:00 p.m.
