Softball bested by Marietta and Carthage
CLERMONT, Fla. - The Defiance College softball team lost both games Tuesday afternoon (Mar. 5) against Marietta and Carthage. The Yellow Jackets were defeated 15-4 by Marietta and 5-2 against Carthage.
Game one vs. Marietta
The Yellow Jackets (1-4) jumped out in front in the first inning. Laney Grimwood scored on a Laney Grimwood single and Savanah Bergman reached on an error to score Payton Mallett and DC led 2-0 after the first inning of play. Marietta (1-3) would score the next eight straight to take an 8-2 lead.
In the bottom of the fourth, the Yellow Jackets loaded the bases with nobody out but could only manage two runs. Guggenbiller scored on a single by Anika Craft and Bergman scored on a wild pitch with two outs.
The Pioneers scored seven runs in the final two innings.
Craft recorded two hits in the game and Grimwood drew two walks.
Game two vs. Carthage
The Yellow Jackets once again struck first in the opening inning as Savanah Bergman scored on a single by Payton Mallett. Carthage tied it up in the bottom of the first inning and scored an unearned run in the second inning to take a 2-1 lead.
Brooke Silcox tied it in the third with an RBI single. Carthage would score the final three runs of the game, scoring single runs in five of the seven innings. Three of their five runs were unearned.
DC had plenty of scoring chances as they recorded a season-high 14 hits as a team but were unable to cash in. In the fifth, DC had runners on second and third with one out but couldn't cash in.
The Yellow Jackets loaded the bases with one out in the sixth. Anika Craft reached on a fielder's choice and Savanah Bergman was forced out at home, and Savannah McCoy grounded out to end the inning.
Silcox led off the seventh with a double and Ali Mowen, Natalee Cooper, and Madison Guggenbiller were retired in order to end the game.
Laney Grimwood finished 4-for-4 in game two and Hailey Johnson pitched 5.0 innings, allowed four runs with two being earned and one strikeout.
The Yellow Jackets are off today and play Westminster (Pa.) and Benedictine (Ill.) tomorrow afternoon at 1:30 p.m. and 3:45 p.m. in Clermont.
