LEXINGTON, Ky. - The Defiance College softball team traveled to Lexington, Ky. for a Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference match-up with the Transylvania Pioneers on Saturday afternoon dropping the double header 10-2, 14-8.
In game one, the Yellow Jackets (16-12 overall, 5-3 HCAC) found themselves trailing early as the Pioneers surged ahead 7-0 before DC responded in the top of the sixth inning. Senior Jordan Osborne (Delaware/Rutherford B. Hayes) drew a lead off walk before freshman Kalin Hubble (Anderson, Ind.) continued to dominate at the plate hitting a homerun to pull DC within 7-2. The Transylvania pitching staff combated the run as they were able to retire the side and secure the game one 10-2 victory.
The Purple and Gold struck first in game two as junior Brooke Gostomsky (Dayton/Covington) hit a homer in the top of the first inning to give DC the early 1-0 lead before Hubble crossed home plate following a wild pitch pushing the advantage to 2-0.
But again, Transylvania responded as they scored four runs in the bottom half of the second inning to capture the 5-2 advantage. The Yellow Jackets remained poise as Gostomsky deemed clutch with an RBI scoring triple. Senior Jackie Hartman (Parma/Padua Franciscan) provided a timely hit later in the inning as she plated two more Defiance base runners to cut the deficit to 6-5.
The Pioneers tacked on two more runs before Hubble registered another homerun tying the contest at 8-8 in the top of the fourth inning.
The Transylvania offense continued to fire on all cylinders as they added four runs in the fifth inning and two in the sixth inning to complete the sweep.
The Purple and Gold return to action on Wednesday, April 17 as they travel to Manchester.
