CLERMONT, FLA. - The Defiance College opened the 2019 season with a split on Saturday afternoon at the Spring Games in Clermont Fla.
The Yellow Jackets (1-1 overall) defeated Johnson & Wales 7-1 but fell to Augustana in the night cap 9-2.
In the season opener, Defiance wasted little time getting on the score board as junior Brooke Gostomsky (Dayton/Covington) hit a home run on her first at bat to put DC on top 1-0 in the top of the first inning.
The scoring frenzy continued for the Purple and Gold as sophomore Emma Perry (Bowling Green/Otsego) singled scoring freshman Makenzie Wilson (Haskins/Otsego) in the top of the third inning followed by a run from Gostomsky. Perry would score later in the inning off a double by senior Michaela Bauer (Hicksville), 4-0.
The Yellow Jackets tacked on a pair of insurance runs in the top of the sixth inning as both freshman Kalin Hubble(Anderson, Ind.) and senior Jackie Hartman (Parma//Padua Franciscan) scored, 6-0. DC plated the games final run in the top of the seventh as Perry crossed the plate for the second time in the contest to ensure the 7-1 victory.
Senior Rachel Wehrman (Fort Loramie/Minster) got the win in the circle for the Purple and Gold as she pitched a complete game allowing one run on three hits.
The Yellow Jackets looked to carry the momentum into game two with Augustana as they scored the games first run in the bottom of the second inning as sophomore Hali Geraci (Springboro) reached home on a wild pitch, 1-0.
However, Augustana had other things in mind as they scored two runs in the fourth and seven in the top of the sixth to seal the early season victory, 9-2.
Defiance returns to action on Sunday, March 3 as they take on Bridgewater at 9:15 a.m. followed by Bates at 1:45 p.m.
