Anderson edges Yellow Jackets, 2-1
DEFIANCE, Ohio - The Defiance College men's soccer team tried to put together a late rally but ultimately came up short, losing to Anderson 2-1 Wednesday afternoon at Winsper-Knobel Memorial Field.
Anderson improves to 8-5-2 overall and 1-3-1 in the HCAC while Defiance drops to 4-6-4 and 1-2-2 in the HCAC.
The two teams combined for eight corner kicks in the first 12 minutes of action but both teams were unable to capitalize on the opportunities. A few minutes later, Anderson's leading scorer Jordan Bossman put his team on top by creating an opportunity inside the box and finishing in the 16th minute.
In the 33rd minute, Will Gehlhausen committed a foul just outside the box and Anderson's Dalton Grubbs scored to double the lead. The Ravens would enter halftime leading 2-0.
The Yellow Jackets were unable to convert any of their nine corner kicks in the second half. Defiance was able to avoid their second straight shutout as Riley Hensley scored his team-leading 10th goal in the 87th minute. The Yellow Jackets attempted to tie the game late as Anderson committed a foul a few feet outside the box on the left hand side. Riley Hensley took the kick and it skidded on the ground to Anderson's keeper Josh Brown who made the save despite momentarily bobbling it to seal the deal for the Ravens.
The Yellow Jackets finished with an 11-8 advantage in corner kicks and a 17-15 shot advantage. Hensley led the team in shots with eight and Quinn Holtzapple and Joshua Maurer each recorded two shot attempts. Orry Killam faced five shots and made three saves.
The Yellow Jackets travel to Franklin to play the Grizzlies on Saturday, Oct. 14. The game is a doubleheader with the women and the men will play at 3:30 p.m.
