DEFIANCE, Ohio - The visiting Wittenberg Tigers came to Winsper Knobel Memorial Field Saturday afternoon for their season opener and edged the Yellow Jackets in the contest, 2-1, which drops the Yellow Jackets to 0-2.
Most of the action in this one came in the second half as the two teams played to a scoreless draw in the first half. There were plenty of opportunities to score though as Wittenberg would hold a 12-4 shot advantage in the first half. Riley Hensley and Quinn Holtzapple both had shots on goal in the first half but were denied by Wittenberg goalkeeper.
The Tigers opened the scoring less than two minutes into the second half when Cameron Elliott found the back of the net. The Tigers would add a crucial second goal in the 81st minute for a 2-0 lead. 48 seconds later, Orry Killam launched a deep ball to Riley Hensley and Hensley scored the first goal of the season for the Yellow Jackets.
That would be the last opportunity for Defiance in the game as the Yellow Jackets were unable to record another scoring opportunity for the remainder of the game. Wittenberg had plenty more opportunities in the game by having a plus 16 shot advantage, 25-9.
The Yellow Jackets will hit the road for the first time this season Wednesday night at Case Western Reserve for a 7:30 start time.
