DEFIANCE, Ohio –After struggling on offense for much of the season, the Yellow Jackets' attack came alive to give Defiance a 2-1 win over Marygrove College on a cold and wet evening.
Jackets' sophomore midfielder Evan Allen wasted no time to open up the game's scoring when he ran the end line in the 6th minute and saw his shot deflect off the keeper and into the back of the net. The goal gave DC an early 1-0 lead and the confidence it desperately needed.
Just six minutes after Allen's first goal of the season, sophomore forward Jaiden Henderson sent a cross into the box that senior Joseph Loftis masterfully headed home. The header gave the Jackets a 2-0 lead just 12 minutes into the game. The goal gives Loftis his third of the season, which is the most on the team.
After the game's second goal neither team managed to score for the rest of the first period as Defiance led by two at the halftime break. The Yellow Jackets outshot the Mustangs 5-4 in the first half.
The second half opened with physical play as Defiance was determined to hold onto its two goal lead.
In the 81st minute the Mustangs' Jordan Berry cut the lead down to one when he outmaneuvered the keeper and curled a shot into the top right of an open goal. The goal was Berry's sixth of the season.
After giving up a goal, Defiance managed to hang onto its lead and come away as the victors. The win improves the DC record to 2-7-1 on the year.
The next home game for the Jackets is Saturday, October 1 when they host Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference opponent Hanover College at 3:00 p.m.
