Trio of DC golfers shoot season-lows at Yellow Jacket Spring Invitational
KALIDA, Ohio – Three Defiance College men's golfers fired season-low rounds with a pair setting new 18-hole personal bests over the two-day Yellow Jacket Spring Invitational at Moose Landing Country Club. As a team, the Yellow Jackets claimed fourth place out of five teams as cool, breezy conditions defined the final day of the tournament.
Bretton Basford (Pennville, Ind./Winchester) led Defiance both days and finished 11th among 26 total golfers. The freshman carded a career-best round of 81 on Friday thanks to 38 on the front nine with the help of a fourth-hole birdie. That same half of the course played tougher on day two as he endured 46 strokes but recovered to shoot 40 on the back end for an 86. His 167 for the tournament was Basford's best two-day tournament score during his first year with the Yellow Jackets.
Will Garlock (Lima, Ohio/LCC) fired a career-best round of 91 on Saturday to finish 23rd in the field. It was Garlock's third round in the 90s for the 2023-24 season to aid a career-best 36-hole total of 197.
Zach Canterbury (Tontagany, Ohio/Otsego) also clocked in a season-best round of golf on Saturday with a 90. He shaved one stroke off his score from Friday by sinking a birdie on the sixth hole. Canterbury's 181 was his lowest 36-hole score of the campaign to finish 19th overall.
Brenden Garvin (Vancouver, Wash./Prairie) finished in the upper half of the field in 13th with an 89 and 90 for a 36-hole total of 180. Sam Boyles (Navarre, Ohio/Fairless) shook off a 100-stroke first day of the tournament by hitting a 92 through the chilly air on Saturday for a 192.
Kalamazoo's Tyler Omness claimed the individual title with a 154, beating Tiffin's Andrew Combs by one stroke. The Hornets also won the team championship with a 637 team score and were eight shots clear of the Dragons.
The men's program has just the HCAC Championships remaining on the schedule. The three-day conference title will be held at The Country Club of Terre Haute beginning on May 3.
