Gunner Gregg named HCAC Hitter of the Week after hot finish to season
CARMEL, Ind. – Defiance College junior infielder Gunner Gregg earned the HCAC Hitter of the Week Award for the final week of the regular season and DC's final week of competition in the conference.
The Oak Harbor product hit for the cycle in the first game of the Yellow Jackets' doubleheader sweep over Earlham on Sunday. He led off the game with a triple before homering to center in his second at-bat in the third. He recorded a single in the fifth inning and completed the feat with an RBI double in the seventh. The four-hit performance was a career-best and he also earned the save on the mound by locking down the final three outs of the 7-4 win. In a thrilling 12-9 comeback in the second game, Gregg homered again late and went 2-for-5.
During Saturday's doubleheader at Manchester, Gregg had a 2-for-4 performance with a double and RBI in the team's 5-1 win in Game 1. He added another hit in the second contest, finishing the doubleheader 3-for-9. In Thursday's loss to Ohio Northern, Gregg worked his way on base with a walk and went 0-for-3 during a rain-shortened contest.
Gregg helped the Jackets to wins in 3 of the last 4 games of the season. His stat line was 9-for-21 (.429) over five games during the week with three multi-hit games. He connected on five extra-base hits, including the pair of homers on Sunday, and drove in eight runs while scoring six times as well.
The HCAC Hitter of the Week Award for Gregg is the first weekly honor for a DC baseball player since Cohen Nies picked up Pitcher of the Week during the final week of competition in 2020 and the first Hitter of the Week since Ben Bucklew in 2019.
