Baseball Has Four Earn HCAC Postseason Recognition
GREENWOOD, IND. -- The Defiance College baseball team had four individuals recognized by the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference for their individiual efforts on the playing field this season.
GREENWOOD, IND. -- The Defiance College baseball team had four individuals recognized by the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference for their individiual efforts on the playing field this season.
Highlighting this year's list of recipients was senior Zach Reed (Midland, Mich./Bullock Creek) and sophomore Paris Creek (Bryan) who were both named first-team.
Reed earned All-Conference honors for the second time in his career and his first first-team award. He was a honorable mention pick last season. This past spring, Reed played in and started all 39 games. He led the team in several statistical categories including: batting average (.367), at-bats (158), hits (58), runs (40), triples (six), total bases (79), slugging percentage (.500) and stolen bases (32). His six triples and 32 stolen bases were both DC single-season records. In addition, Reed's 58 hits were the second most recorded in a season. He had 17 multi-hit games with a best of four hits on two separate occasions.
For his career, played in 139 games and started 134. He posted a .305 lifetime batting average (145-of-475) with two home runs, 13 triples, 19 doubles, 88 runs scored and 69 runs batted in. He also ended his career with 47 walks and 60 stolen bases in 65 attempts. His 13 triples is the program's all-time mark and his 60 stolen bases were the fourth most. Reed also ranked in the top-10 all-time in hits (6th-145), at-bats (6th-475) and runs scored (9th-88).
Creek capped a solid season with his first All-Conference selection. Over the course of the season, he established himself as the team's top reliever which also included a handful of starts throughout the season. Creek led the team in appearances with 19 and earned run average at 1.70. He also finished second in wins with three (3-2 overall), complete games (two), saves (two) and was third in strikeouts with 26. In addition, Creek was fourth in innings pitched at 53.0.
Joining Reek and Creek on the All-Conference Teams was senior Nick Peters (Macomb, Mich./Eisenhower) as a honorable mention selection. Peters led the starting pitching staff in appearances (13) and starts (12), with a team-high three complete games. His 12 starts this season also tied him for the conference lead. He also led the team in wins with six (6-4 overall), innings pitched at 84.1 and was third in strikeouts with 49. His 84.1 innings were the second most recorded by a DC pitcher in a single season. He recorded four games where he tallied five or more strikeouts, including a career-high nine "K's" on Mar. 10 against Alvernia (Pa.) University.
Peters becomes a two-time All-HCAC award winner in his career after garnering second-team accolades last season. He ended his career with a 13-8 record in 41 total appearances with 25 starts and seven complete games. Peters posted a 4.70 lifetime ERA with 107 strikeouts in 195.1 innings. His 13 career victories put him in a tie for eighth all-time in program history. In addition, Peters ranked ninth in innings pitched (195.1).
Also recognized by the HCAC this season was senior Dominic Holutiak (Maple Heights/Horizon Science) who was selected to the All-Sportsmanship Team.
This spring, Holutiak appeared in three games out of the bullpen and pitched a total of 2.1 innings. For his career, he pitched in six games and pitched four complete innings.
