ADA, OHIO -- The Defiance College baseball team was defeated by Ohio Northern University, 11-1, in a non-conference single game at Wander Field in Ada.
The Yellow Jacket bats had a strong day at the plate, but the runs were scarce despite 10 hits and two multi-hit efforts by seniors Ryan Kohlhofer (Walbridge/Lake) and Gary Levengood (Beverly Hills, Fla./Lecanto). Both players finished two-of-four on the day and Kohlhofer also added a RBI. Six other players each recorded a base hit in the loss.
Ohio Northern (9-5) struck early scoring four runs in the bottom of the first inning to take a sizeable, 4-0, advantage. The Polar Bears then added two more runs in the fourth to extend the lead to 6-0. Defiance (7-5) plated a run in the top of the fifth on a RBI-single by Kohlhofer that allowed junior Zack Reed (Midland, Mich./Bullock Creek) to score.
The lone run by the Jackets would turn out to be all the scoring for DC, however, as ONU went on to add two additional runs in the sixth and three more in the seventh en route to the 11-1 final.
Defiance sent six players to the mound with sophomore Jacob Green (Defiance) getting the start. Green would pitch an inning and allowed four runs, two earned, on three hits. He also ended up with the loss and is now 0-1 overall for the season.
