George M. Smart Center
The George M. Smart Athletic Center is an 84,000-square-foot field house that opened in February 2012. The multi-purpose floor provides additional year-round training areas for all varsity athletic programs but is officially home to the Defiance College indoor track and field teams.
The Smart Center's Richard and Carolyn Small Track is 200 meters in length. The facility also houses two weight rooms, the Randall and Marilyn Buchman Fitness Center operated by the YMCA and the AVD Student-Athlete Weight Room. "The George" also boasts a full athletic training room named for long-time coach Duane Hocking. The athletic center is also equipped with two full-length batting cages and a complete system of dividers to allow the space to be used my multiple teams at once.
George Smart played football and baseball at Defiance College and earned his degree in 1967. He was the captain and quarterback of the Yellow Jackets' undefeated 1966 football season before going on to be a successful businessman and member of DC's Board of Trustees.
Has recently hosted the 2013, 2016, 2019, and 2022 Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference Indoor Track and Field Championships.
