ERIE, Penn. - The Defiance College volleyball team hit the road for another packed weekend of action, this time visiting the Penn St.-Behrend Tournament. The Yellow Jackets fell in a close five set battle with Westminster 3-2 (25-20, 17-25, 14-25, 25-20, 18-16) before responding with an emphatic 3-0 (27-25, 25-13, 25-21) win over the hosts.
The first matchup of the day saw the sides trade blows as Westminster struck first. After a pair of DC set wins, the Titans responded with a five point victory in the fourth before edging out the Yellow Jackets 18-16 in the decisive set.
Head Coach Brie Brenner's side promptly responded in the second contest of the day. Defiance snuck out a 27-25 victory in the first set before pushing forward to win the second by a 12 point margin and following with a closer 25-21 third set.
Delaney Monnin (Defiance / Tinora) continued her high-powered attacking performances with 33 kills on the day. The sophomore averaged 4.13 kills per set over her eight sets played Friday evening. Mackenzie Benham (Marshall, Mich. / Marshall) and Jessi Davis (Delta / Delta) added 21 and 20 kills respectively to the affairs.
Defensively Morgan Porter (Defiance / Defiance) tallied 56 digs from her normal libero position. Twelve Yellow Jackets contributed digs to the day's 172 including Brianna Wheeler (Sturgis, Mich. / Sturgis) with 26 and Abigail Cronnin (Lambertville, Mich. / Cardinal Stritch Catholic) recording 23.
After the pair of Friday night matches, Defiance's record now stands at 4-3 overall. DC continues action in the Penn St.-Behrend Tournament Saturday as they take on Bethany at 1:00 pm and Fredonia at 3:00 pm.
