Volleyball Picks Up Road Win Against Capital
CLEVELAND, OHIO - The Defiance College volleyball team split on the final day of the Case Western Reserve Invitational defeating Capital 3-1 (25-12, 21-25, 25-22, 25-14) and falling to Case Western in straight sets (16-25, 19-25, 17-25) on Saturday afternoon.
CLEVELAND, OHIO - The Defiance College volleyball team split on the final day of the Case Western Reserve Invitational defeating Capital 3-1 (25-12, 21-25, 25-22, 25-14) and falling to Case Western in straight sets (16-25, 19-25, 17-25) on Saturday afternoon.
The Yellow Jackets (1-7 overall) were led on the day by junior Emma Seitz (Toledo/Central Catholic) and senior Brooke Plummer (Plain City/Jonathan Alder) with a combined 15 kills a piece, followed by junior Jessi Davis (Delta) with 12 kills. Freshman Jamie DeTro (Angola, Ind./Prairie Heights) finished the day with a team-best 38 assists.
In the contest with Capital, the Defiance attack erupted as they rattled off the sets first six points following back-to-back kills by Davis. The Yellow Jackets continued to dominate the Crusaders as a kill by Seitz extended the lead to double digits, 19-9. Freshman Cassidy Posey (Paulding) would seal the set one victory as she landed a kill to give DC the 1-0 advantage.
In set two, Capital jumped ahead early before a pair of Crusader miscues and another momentum stealing kill by Davis tied the set at 10-10. The two teams exchanged points for several minutes before Capital rallied to claim the set two victory.
Posey dominated set three early for the Yellow Jackets as she tied the contest at 3-3. Defiance rode the momentum as Plummer landed a kill that led to a DC 6-4 lead. However, the Crusaders came storming back as they looked to regain the lead following a DC miscue, 11-9. Defiance would finally surrender the advantage moments later before service aces by DeTro late in the set sparked a four point rally, 22-20. The Purple and Gold went on to score the final three points of the set to claim the victory.
In the final set, DC took the lead early and never looked back scoring four straight points off the service of DeTro, 15-7. Posey continued to carry the momentum for DC as she landed a kill that led to a ten point advantage, 20-10. Seitz would seal the deal for the Purple and Gold as she landed the games final kill.
In the contest with Case Western, Defiance found themselves leading early as a CWRU miscue gave DC the 7-6 advantage. However, Case responded with a five point rally that put them on top 12-7. They never looked back using the momentum to claim the set one victory, 25-16.
Defiance rallied in set two bringing the attack early as Davis connected for a kill that cut the deficit to 14-11. Case continued to over power the Yellow Jackets before a kill by freshman Delaney Monnin (Defiance/Tinora) extended play for DC, 24-19. But again CWRU deemed to much claiming set two 25-19.
In the days final set, Defiance captured the lead early following an impressive serve by DeTro, 7-3. However, Case Western attempted to take back the set as they rattled off four straight points to tie the contest at 8-8. They would then go on to claim the set following a series of runs that led to the straight set victory.
Defiance returns to action on Tuesday, Sept. 11 as they welcome Heidelberg to the Karl H. Weaner Center. Match time is schedule for 7:00 pm.
