CLEVELAND, OHIO - The Defiance College volleyball team fell in straight sets to Hiram College on Friday evening in the opening round of the Case Western Reserve Invitational.
The Purple and Gold (0-6 overall) finished the day with 30 kills and 27 assists, led by junior Emma Seitz 9Toledo/Central Catholic) with a team-high seven kills.
In the opening set, Hiram jumped ahead early before a service ace by freshman Brianna Wheeler (sturgis, Mich.) and a kill by freshman Cassidy Posey (Paulding) gave DC the 8-6 advantage. The two teams exchanged points for several minutes before a late rally by HC gave the Terriers the 19-15 lead. Defiance looked to steal the momentum as a kill by Seitz cut the deficit to 19-16 before Hiram sealed the win with a kill of its own, 25-18.
Freshman Delaney Monnin (Defiance/Tinora) tried to get the offense going in set two as she connected for a kill that broke the Hiram momentum and tied the contest at 2-2. DC continued on the attack as a kill by freshman Jamie DeTro (Angola, Ind./Prairie Heights) once again broke a Hiram rally that pulled Defiance within 5-3. The Terriers responded capitalizing on a DC miscue to push its lead once more to 19-14. However, the Purple and Gold fought back into the contest and tied it at 24-24 before HC sealed the win with a kill by Franks, 27-25.
Defiance came out strong in the final set as they captured the 10-5 advantage following a kill by junior Jessi Davis (Delta). The Purple and Gold continued to cruise as a Hiram miscue and a kill by DeTro pushed the Yellow Jacket lead to 14-8. However, HC once again came roaring back as a late rally gave them the 22-19 advantage. HC would hold onto its slim lead for the remainder of the set and capture the match victory, 25-20.
The Purple and Gold return to action Saturday, Sept. 8 as they take on Case Western Reserve and Capital.
