DEFIANCE, OHIO - The Dix Tennis Facility had plenty of action on Wednesday. The Defiance College tennis courts played host to a three-way match up of Defiance, Ohio Northern, and Concordia (Mich.).
The action was started as the Yellow Jackets hosted Ohio Northern beginning at 12:00 pm. The talented Polar Bear team was able to pull out the victory taking all 9 matches. Both sides battled through the elements as the heat continued to rise throughout the afternoon. On the number two court Yellow Jacket fans saw the DC duo of Cayla Walker (Archbold / Archbold) and Sydney Huston (Indianapolis, Ind. / Lawrence) win four games but ultimately drop the set 8-4. The other two doubles matchups saw the Yellow Jacket sides of Hannah Hesterman (Archbold / Archbold) and A.J. Breneman (Bryan / Bryan), and Chelsey Braunwart (Trenton / Edgewood) and Rylea Amspaugh each fall 8-1.
On the singles side, Hesterman battled through a 6-3 first set loss before ultimately retiring from the number one singles matchup. Breneman was able to take four games of her two-setter and fell 6-1, 6-3. Walker and Huston each took games in the first set, but were blanked in the second set of their matches. Braunwart and Amspaugh fell in their matchups with 6-1, 6-1 and 6-0, 6-0 scorelines respectively.
After a matchup between Ohio Northern and Concordia, the Yellow Jackets were once again ready to hit the court. Unfortunately, due to darkness the match was abandoned without conclusion on the singles side of action. The remainder of the Concordia match has been postponed until further notice.
The women's tennis team is set to hit the road on Tuesday, Sept. 11 as they travel to Trine University. The start time for the match is set for 5:15 pm.
