BATTLE CREEK, MICH. - The Defiance College women's tennis team fought through adversity to start the season off on a high note Wednesday evening. The Yellow Jackets claimed victory over Olivet College by a score of 6-3.
Inclement weather delayed the start of the 2018 season, and ultimately shortened the tennis action on Wednesday, but the weather could not stop the Yellow Jackets from a quick start. Defiance (1-0) was able to win two of the three doubles matchups to begin the evening. The number one duos pair of sophomore A.J. Breneman (Bryan / Bryan) and senior Hannah Hesterman (Archbold / Archbold) earned a convincing 6-1 victory. The number two duos pairing of sophomore Sydney Huston (Indianapolis, Ind. / Lawrence) and senior Cayla Walker (Archbold / Archbold) followed suit with a 6-2 victory.
The singles side of competition saw similar success for the Yellow Jackets. Hesterman and Breneman were each victorious in number one and two singles with scorelines of 6-2. Similarly, Walker earned a 6-1 win over her Comet opponent to claim number three singles for the Yellow Jackets. The number five singles matchup saw a closer contest as Defiance senior Chelsey Braunwart (Trenton / Edgewood) won by a scoreline of 6-4. The Comets were able to claim two victories in singles competition as Defiance's Sydney Huston fell 6-1 and Rylea Amspaugh fell 6-0.
