Yellow Jackets Fall Short in Season Opener

SOUTHFIELD, MICH - The Defiance College women's tennis team fell short of the Lawrence Tech (Mich.) Blue Devils by a match score of 7-2.
Defiance (0-1) finished doubles play 2-1 with a win due to a forfeit in the third doubles spot from the Blue Devils (1-0). Senior Savannah Marquez (Porterville, Calif. /Porterville) and freshman Hannah Hesterman (Archbold) teamed up in first doubles and fell by a score of 8-2. Fellow Yellow Jackets Haley Kuhlman (Oregon/Clay) and Danielle Vance (Defiance) played second doubles and came short by a score of 8-1.
The closest singles match of the afternoon came from Hesterman at the second singles spot. Hesterman forced her opponent to a tie-break in the first set and then followed up with a close second set score of 6-4.
The other point in favor of Defiance came from a second default in the sixth singles spot, to finalize the match score of 7-2 in favor of the Blue Devils.
The Yellow Jackets return to the courts on Friday, Sept. 4 when they host non-conference foe Ohio Northern University at the Dix Tennis Facility. First serve is set for 5:30 p.m.
