DEFIANCE, Ohio – The Defiance College women's soccer team wrapped up their 2019 season with a loss to Hanover College Saturday afternoon. Prior to the game, seniors Madi Bowman, Malia Ferry, Sarah Madaras, Kiana Carpenter, Jordan Furko, Kat Wicher, Blake Newman, and Emily Miller were honored in their final stand in a Yellow Jacket uniform.
The Panthers opened the scoring early as they took the 3-0 lead by the 13th minute of action. After forty-five minutes of play, Hanover tacked on six more goals taking a 9-0 lead.
After the break, Defiance held the Panthers scoreless for the remainder of the game. The Yellow Jackets held a tight line catching Hanover offsides nine times throughout the day.
In frame for Defiance goalies, Madi Bowman (Eaton, Ohio/ Eaton) and Rachel Lowell (Lakewood, Ohio/ Lakewood ) split time. Bowman saw 15 shots on goal and recorded 12 saves during 65 minutes of play, while Lowell tallied 2 saves on 6 shots on goal during 25 minutes of play.
Offensively, senior Kiana Carpenter (Holmesville, Ohio. / Triway) led the Yellow Jackets, recording two shots on frame. Fellow seniors Blake Newman (Jackson, Mich. / Lumen Christi ), Kat Wicher (Toledo, Ohio. / Whitmer), and Sarah Madaras (Kalamazoo, Mich. / Parchment) all tacked on a shot in the offensive opportunities for the Purple and Gold. However, the Panthers prevailed from the high scoring first half, causing the Defiance to suffer a 9-0 HCAC loss to end the season.
The Yellow Jackets conclude their season with an overall record of 4-15-1, and 0-9 in Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference play. To begin the season wins over Andrews University and Penn State Beaver stood as the first back-to-back wins for the Yellow Jackets since 2014.
