BETHANY, W. VA.- The Defiance College women's soccer team took a tough loss at Bethany (W.Va.) College losing a double overtime game, 1-0, in Bethany, W.Va.
The Defiance (0-4) defense battled to defend their net against Bethany (1-3) in the first half as the Bison outshot the Yellow Jackets, 10-0. Six of the Bethany shots found their way on net, but solid play by DC freshman goalkeeper Madi Bowman (Eaton) kept all six shots from finding the back of the net and preserved a 0-0 scoreless tie after the first 45 minutes.
In the second half, the Yellow Jackets produced seven shots. Freshman Miranda Herevia (Port Clinton) took two shots. Fellow freshman Katie Settich (Huber Heights/Chamindale Julienna) also took a pair of shot attempts, both on goal, but were stopped by the opponent's goalkeeper. Freshman Kat Wicher (Toledo/Whitmer) took two shots as well and freshman Natalie Lasley (Defiance) took the final shot on goal for DC. Neither shot could break the scoreless tie and the Yellow Jacket defense, led by Bowman, continued its solid play not allowing the Bison to get the potential game-winner or go-ahead score in the final 45 minutes forcing overtime.
In the first overtime, Defiance took the only shots of the period, including four on net. Herevia recorded one of those attempts along with freshmen Sarah Madaras (Kalamazoo/Parchment), Lauren Osglesbee (Kenton/Benjamin Logan) and Settich. All four scoring chances ended in a save for the opponent resulting in a second overtime period.
In the final overtime period, junior Kassie Memmer (Bowling Green) was the only Jacket to produce a shot, which was saved by the Bison. With under a minute remaining in the game, Bethany tallied the difference maker at the 109:16 mark clinching the 1-0 victory.
Bowman played the entire game in net for the Jackets. She allowed just the lone goal and recorded nine saves.
Defiance will return to action tomorrow (Sunday, Sept. 11) against non-conference opponent Oberlin College in Oberlin, Ohio. The game is slated to begin at 2 p.m.
