GAMBIER, Ohio – Kenyon College rode a late goal in the first half to victory over the Yellow Jackets, 3-0.
Kenyon (3-3-1) started out fast on Defiance (2-4), taking three shots within the first 10 minutes of play. But, like she has all year, June Delgreco (Dearborn Heights, Mich. / Crestwood) played strong in the box. She turned away all three shots, keeping the score 0-0.
The DC defense picked up its play over the next 13 minutes, controlling the field and getting the ball up to the offense.
Halfway through the 23rd minute, the Yellow Jackets created an opportunity for themselves. Lindsay Bubnick (Vandalia/Butler) took the shot for DC and put it toward the net, causing the Kenyon goalkeeper to have to make a play.
Bubnick nearly found another goal in the 34th minute, when she let go of a shot that sailed just over the crossbar.
Delgreco would end the first half with six saves on seven shots on goal from Kenyon.
The one shot she was not able to step in front of was a free kick from just outside the goal box. That goal came with less than five minutes left to go in the first half.
The goal would also be the game winner for Kenyon as they carried that 1-0 lead into halftime.
Bubnick and the offense were able to find two more threats in the second half. Bubnick took two more shots for the Yellow Jackets but came up empty handed on both attempts.
Kenyon was able to widen the gap in the second half, scoring two more goals to mark the final 3-0 score.
Delgreco ended with 11 saves on the day for the Yellow Jackets. Bubnick led DC in shots and shots on goal with four and one.
The Yellow Jackets have a quick turnaround, playing again in two days. They will travel to Wilmington to battle the Quakers. Start time is set for 1 pm.
