DEFIANCE, Ohio – On an stormy day in Defiance, the DC women's soccer team fell 3-0 to the Wilmington Quakers in a match that was delayed nearly two hours due to lightning. The loss halts the Jackets three game winning streak as they drop to 4-3-2.
The thunderstorms hit about one minute and 15 seconds after the 1:00 p.m. scheduled kickoff and the referee's signaled for a postponement. Finally, after the lightning had passed, the teams gathered and got back on the field, as action resumed at about 3:00 p.m.
Unfortunately for the Yellow Jackets, Wilmington took advantage of the break, as it came out with the energy and scored a goal less than 50 seconds into the restart to take an early 1-0 advantage.
As the rain continued, the two teams battled the weather to maintain possession of the ball. DC was able to register a few attempts at the net, but the Quakers were in control of the game as their attack had constant pressure on the Jackets.
Finally, in the 40th minute of the first period the defense cracked again, as Wilmington's Lauren Price drilled the back of the net to make it 2-0 and the Quakers took that lead into halftime.
After the break, Defiance came out but just could not find its rhythm on offense that it had in the past few games. After posting five shots in the first period, DC was only able to muster up two in the second.
Wilmington added another score in the 54th minute to truly seal the game and head back home with a 3-0 road victory and improve to 7-1-1 on the season.
The Lady Yellow Jackets will regroup tomorrow and be back in action on Monday, September 24 when they travel to Rochester, Michigan to battle the Warriors. The game is set for 4:00 p.m.
