DEFIANCE, Ohio – The Lady Jackets found themselves in a 2-0 hole 14 minutes into the first period, and went down 3-0 early in the second half before rallying with two quick goals to cut the deficit to one with 10 minutes remaining. Marietta hung on to defeat Defiance, 3-2, and drop the Jackets to 1-2 on the season.
The Pioneers were relentless offensively, posting 19 shots in the game, with 15 of those shots on goal. Marsha Hupp, Danielle Staub and Tessa Harlow each found the net for Marietta as the Jackets surrendered their highest point total of the season.
DC's Melissa Alston triggered a change in momentum in the 78th minute when she bent a free kick over the Marietta defenders that found grass and took a tricky bounce to evade the MC goalkeeper. Two minutes later, Katie Heitkamp notched her first goal of the season off an assist from Janelle Doenges, and the Lady Jackets were suddenly within striking distance.
Defiance continued to threaten with some close-range shots on goal, but MC's Kelly Sommers recorded her first two saves of the contest in the waning minutes of the game to preserve the lead and the victory for Marietta.
The Lady Jackets will return to the pitch on Tuesday, September 14th, when they host Trine University (1-3) at 4:00 p.m.
