DEFIANCE, Ohio - An impressive effort ended with a disappointing result on Friday, when a late goal by Greenville's Abby Freesmeier handed the Lady Jackets their first loss of the season. Defiance outshot Greenville 15-8 in the game, but could not find the net despite some promising opportunities.
The Yellow Jackets were active on offense in their first game of the season, applying pressure to the Panthers' defense on numerous occasions. DC's Cherylin Borkholder and Janelle Doenges each tallied four shots and three shots on goal in the match to lead the offensive attack, however Greenville goalkeepers, Heidi Koehl and Emily Rose, teamed up to record 10 saves in the contest, with several of the high-difficulty variety.
Kelly Coble played well for DC in front of the net, racking up five saves and allowing just one goal against a Greenville squad that posted six goals against Lindenwood University on Wednesday. DC midfielders Dani Chadwick and Melissa Alston each recorded two shots in the contest, while freshmen Bibiana Parra and Karly Smith both recorded the first shots of their young careers for the Lady Jackets.
The team will look to bounce back tomorrow at 11:00 a.m., when they square off against Waynesburg College (0-1-1), to kick-off the second day of the DC Classic Tournament. Waynesburg ended in a 0-0 draw in their tournament-opener against Ohio Wesleyan on Friday.
