DC wrestlers compete at Waynesburg
WAYNESBURG, Pa. – The Defiance College wrestling team trekked south of Pittsburgh for the Waynesburg Invitational hosted by Waynesburg University and came away with two top-six finishers. As a team, the Yellow Jackets finished 11th after accumulating 26.5 points.
DC senior Alejandro Castro had the busiest day of the group finishing fourth place in the 157 weight class and went 4-2 on the day. He lost in the quarterfinal but advanced three times through the consolation grouping, which included a victory by fall in 46 seconds following his first defeat, before being pinned in the third place match.
Fellow senior Seth Majewski garnered a sixth-place finish and won each of his matches wrestled, but surrendered three straight by medical forfeit in the 133-pound bracket.
Shamique Bryant, a junior, competed at 149 and won his opening match before dropping his next two. Jake Scoville and Kliever Joseph were each knocked out after back-to-back losses at the same weight class.
Sophomore Joey Perez won his first bout at 197 before he was dropped in the quarterfinals by a pin in 56 seconds. He went the distance in his first consolation match but was defeated by an 8-0 decision.
Heavyweight Lesly Fleurissaint narrowly lost by an 8-7 decision in the second round of his weight class before he was pinned down in 2:52. Kelvin Ruffin went 0-2 at 197 as did Brent Eicher at 157 and Brandon Ruiz at 141.
Other teams in the competition were Heidelberg, Fairmont State, Johns Hopkins, Penn College, Alma, Waynesburg, Washington & Jefferson, Alderson Broaddus, Muskingum and Glenville State also competed alongside the Yellow Jackets in Pennsylvania.
