Women's golf lands two on HCAC watchlist
The Defiance College women's golf team has been selected to finish ninth in the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference women's golf season coaches poll. Shelby Mercer and Mari Najar were named to the HCAC Athletes to Watch list.
CARMEL, Ind. – The Defiance College women's golf team has been selected to finish ninth in the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference women's golf season coaches poll. The top five spots went to Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology, Transylvania University, Hanover College, Mount St. Joseph University, and Franklin College.
Defiance senior Shelby Mercer (Canton, Ohio/GlenOak) and junior Mari Najar (Adrian, Mich. / Madison) were named to the HCAC Athletes to Watch list. Mercer recorded a 97.33 scoring average over nine rounds in four events during the spring 2021 campaign while Majar a 101.86 average over seven rounds. The two women each had a season-low round of 94.
At the HCAC Championship in the spring, Mercer placed 26th and Majar finished 29th in a field of 48 competitors.
The Yellow Jackets will open the season on Friday at the Trine University Women's Invitational on the grounds of the Zollner Golf Course in Angola, Ind.
