LEXINGTON, KY. - Senior Sam Ervin (Bloomdale/Elmwood) posted a career game as the Yellow Jackets fell in the semifinal contest of the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference Tournament to nationally ranked Transylvania on Friday evening, 95-67.
Ervin concluded the year with a career-high 33 points, including three deep balls.
As a team, the Yellow Jackets shot 27-of-51 (52.9 %) from the floor with eight three-pointers.
Defiance opened the contest strong as freshman Taylor Day (West Mansfield/North Union) and sophomore Kalyn Pickens (Fort Wayne, Ind./R. Nelson Snyder) found back-to-back scores to put DC on top 6-4 with 7:24 remaining. However, the Pioneer offense caught fire and never looked back using an 8-0 run to take the 12-6 advantage. Transylvania dominated much of the first half as they entered the break with the 49-32 lead.
The Purple and Gold tried to get something going early in the third period as junior Shelby Stamm (Bellevue) connected for back-to-back three-pointers that pulled the Yellow Jackets within 56-42. The Pioneers responded once more as their hot streak continued from behind the arc to seal the semifinal victory.
The Yellow Jackets finished the season 10-17 overall and ranked fifth in the HCAC, the best finish since the 2012-2013 season.
