Yellow Jackets Shoot Past Anderson

ANDERSON, IND. - The Defiance College women's basketball team dominated Anderson en route to the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference victory on Thursday evening, 67-51.
Defiance saw three members score in double-digits led by junior Shelby Stamm (Bellevue) with a game-high 18, while senior Sam Ervin (Bloomdale/Elmwood) netted 14 and sophomore Kalyn Pickens (Fort Wayne, Ind./R. Nelson Snyder) added 11 points.
The Yellow Jackets and Ravens exchanged points early in the opening period when senior Ashley Lee (Millington, Mich.) netted a deep ball that put DC on top 9-8 midway through the first period. Stamm would tack on the final score of the period as she connected for a three-pointer that gave the Purple and Gold the 12-10 advantage.
In the second period, freshman Taylor Day scored six straight points to push the DC lead to 18-14 with just over six minutes remaining. The Yellow Jackets continued to surge ahead as senior Lauren Rogers (Munger, Mich.) hit a three-pointer that extended the lead to 25-17. Defiance closed out the half on a 10-0 run to enter the break with the 37-28 advantage.
Defiance carried the momentum into the second half as they strung together another small run to blow the game open 45-31 with five minutes to play in the period. Anderson looked to make a comeback when Stamm again delivered a dagger from behind the arc with three minutes to play, 49-31. DC entered the final period of action with the 50-32 lead following a free-throw by freshman Nysha Speed (Sterling Heights, Mich.).
In the final period, Ervin continued the hot shooting from deep as she hit a shot with 8:11 remaining to push the lead to 55-36. The Purple and Gold never looked back as they went on to claim the victory 67-51.
The Purple and Gold return to action on Saturday, February 2 as they play host to Mount St. Joseph. Tip off is set for 1 p.m.
